Guardiola leads race for Brazil’s NT spot

The news regarding Pep Guardiola’s interest in taking the now-vacant spot of Brazil’s NT coach seemingly touched not only the hearts of common Brazilians but also the talking heads at CBF as well. Lancenet reports that according to a close person in the works of CBF, Guardiola is first in the list of favored coaches to take the reins at the Seleção after Mano Menezes departure.

According to Lancenet, Pep Guardiola is first in preference, followed by Corinthians’ Tite, Fluminense’s Abel Braga and Grêmio’s Wanderley Luxemburgo. Former Brazil NT, Portugal NT, Chelsea and Palmeiras coach Luiz Felipe Scolari could also join the race, given his popularity with the public. José Maria Marin, current CBF president, is aware that the move could be impeded by wage and bureaucratic problems, but the approach is expected to be made in the near future.

Interestingly enough, even though the media said the public could somehow reject Guardiola’s indication to become Brazil’s NT coach, a (still small) sample of them said exactly the opposite. In polls held by major sports outlets here in Brazil, all of them have Guardiola leading the race in preference.

Pep Guardiola – 65,5%
Luiz Felipe Scolari – 14,43%
Muricy Ramalho – 10,3%
Abel Braga – 3,37%
Tite – 2,03

Guardiola – 31,19%
Scolari – 21,12%
Muricy Ramalho – 16,36%
Tite – 10,83%
Abel Braga – 7,55%
Wanderley Luxemburgo – 7,55%
Ney Franco – 5,59%

Guardiola – 62%
Scolari – 15%
Muricy – 12%
Tite  – 4%
Abel Braga – 4%
Luxemburgo – 3%

Guardiola – 48%

Scolari – 16%

Muricy Ramalho – 13%

Tite – 7%

Joel Santana – 5%

Dunga – 5%

Luxemburgo – 4%

Carlos Alberto Parreira – 2%

It’s certainly interesting to see how our trend, which looked awfully close to England’s, of only relying on inbred coaches to lead the national team, seems to be taking a turn these days. Guardiola would certainly improve Brazil’s NT level of play in several ways, and I should look toward writing about that in the near future.

Until then, we’ll live on fortuitous hope. May our hopes come true!
